Urinary incontinence is a common problem in which you accidentally leak urine. There are several different types, causes and treatments:
Stress incontinence: in this case, urine leaks due to weakened pelvic muscles. It happens when the pressure on the bladder increases while coughing, laughing, sneezing or while doing exercise. It can also happen after pregnancy and childbirth, which is also due to weakness of pelvic floor muscles. Other causes are obesity and in men after having prostate surgery.
Urge incontinence: In this case there is sudden urge to urinate, which often remains unnoticed. Caused due to damage to bladder nerves or other parts of the nervous system or due to aging. It is mostly noticed in conditions such as Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Urinary tract infection or bladder stones.
Overflow incontinence: In this case, the bladder is not completely emptied and there is dribbling of urine. Caused due to weak bladder muscles, nerve damage, enlarged prostate or constipation.
Functional incontinence: Mental or physical problems such as dementia or arthritis may prevent you from reaching the bathroom in time.
If you experience frequent leakage of urine while coughing or sneezing, then you should do Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which support the uterus, bladder, small intestine and rectum. The pelvis is the area between the hips that holds your reproductive organs. The muscles you use to stop your urine flow are your pelvic muscles. Both men and women can benefit from Kegel exercises. In men, pelvic floor muscles weaken after surgical removal of prostate due to prostatic hypertrophy; due to diabetes, overactive bladder or in old age. In women, the muscles weaken after repeated childbirth, excessive straining from constipation or chronic coughing, in old age and due to obesity. 10 to 15 repetitions of Kegel exercises should be done three times a day. You should make Kegel exercises a part of your daily routine. Make sure your bladder is empty, then lie or sit down. Tighten the pelvic floor muscles, then hold the contractions for three seconds and relax for three seconds. Make sure not to flex the muscles of abdomen, thighs or buttocks. Kegel exercises can also be done during pregnancy or after childbirth. These exercises are very useful for treating urinary incontinence, vaginal and uterine prolapse. It can be done anytime, whether you are sitting on the chair or lying on your bed. The result may be seen in few weeks to few months, if performed regularly.
